Orienteering at Lavenham Woodland Project’s Dyehousefield Wood

Welcome to Lavenham’s family orienteering courses.  They are printed separately.  All the markers on the short course are in Dyehousefield Wood.  The longer course adds a walk/run along the field paths which takes you through different environments, and offers novel views of the back of Lavenham.

The courses are designed with children in mind, as a way for them to get out in the fresh air and have some fun, taking notice of their environment.

What you could do:

  • Visit all the markers on your course,

  • Each marker post has a red and white orienteering marker on it.

  • On each marker post you will find the name of a tree or shrub immediately close by, together with leaf images.  Try to identify the tree which will be close to the marker.

  • You may visit the markers in any order.

You must

  • Keep to the footpaths as indicated on the map. Please do not cross the farmer’s fields across cultivated land.

  • Be aware that by the north side of the Lavenham Walk there is a stream with very high, steep banks.  You may not go here.

  • Take care in the woods. In places there are stands of nettles and in times of rain the paths become very slippery.

  • Never climb over any fence.

  • Please carry your litter home.

You are in the countryside now, so please wear appropriate footwear and clothing.

We would like you to want to return to Dyehousefield Wood, so please follow our advice, and have a good time, walking and running, as well as identifying more of the trees each time, you come in every season.

This orienteering course is provided by Lavenham Woodland Project Ltd..  We are grateful  to Lavenham Parish Council and neighbouring landowners for their support and interest.

You might want to consider becoming a Friend of Dyehousefield Wood.  You can contact us at 01787247728, or jknight@uwclub.net , or see us the second Sunday of any month, from 9.30 a.m., here in the woodland or on the Lavenham Walk.

Please note that participants take part at their own risk and accept that neither the course planner, nor Lavenham Woodland Project, can be held responsible for any accident, injury or damage that could occur. Please take appropriate steps to look after your own safety and ensure that young children are supervised on the courses until their map reading skills are assured.
